Quick answer
AI Employee is HighLevel's bundle of AI tools: it replies to messages on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, SMS, email and website chat, answers phone calls, replies to reviews and writes content. It is billed per sub-account: $50 a month on Growth or $97 on Unlimited (subject to fair use), plus a $20 Starter plan for agencies on the $497 Founder plan. Without a plan, AI is billed per use. Phone and WhatsApp charges are always separate.
If you run a business outside the US, most of your leads probably write on WhatsApp or Instagram, often after hours and sometimes in more than one language. Hiring someone to cover nights and weekends is expensive. Letting messages sit until morning is how deals go to a competitor. HighLevel’s answer is the AI Employee inside GoHighLevel.
This guide explains what the AI Employee actually does, which channels and languages it covers, how the plans compare and which costs sit outside the subscription. Every price and rule below was checked on HighLevel’s pricing page and help center on November 6, 2026.
What the AI Employee is
“AI Employee” is HighLevel’s name for its bundle of AI products, not a single bot. Each part handles one job, and all of them live in the same account as your CRM, pipelines, calendars and conversations. If you are new to the platform, the complete GoHighLevel guide covers everything it includes.
| AI product | What it does |
|---|---|
| Conversation AI | Replies to text messages, answers questions, captures lead details and books, reschedules or cancels appointments |
| Voice AI | Answers calls, qualifies callers and books appointments, including missed calls |
| Reviews AI | Drafts replies to your business reviews |
| Content AI | Writes copy, social posts, emails and images |
| Ask AI and AI Studio | An in-app assistant and a workspace for building AI agents and tools |
Workflow AI (AI actions inside automations, such as summarize, translate and intent detection) and Agent Studio (advanced agents) have their own pricing.
Channels and languages
HighLevel’s Conversation AI setup article lists these channels: SMS, email, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, live chat and the website chat widget. For most markets outside the US, WhatsApp is the one that matters, and it is supported.
Two points to keep in mind:
- WhatsApp is billed separately. The integration costs $10 a month per sub-account, plus Meta’s per-message rates, which vary by country. The GoHighLevel WhatsApp guide breaks down the rates.
- Voice AI is multilingual. HighLevel’s language article lists English (US), Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Russian, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, Italian and Dutch. Agents can use one language or a combination, though some languages cannot be combined. Test before you put an agent on live calls.
How it behaves: suggestions or auto-pilot
Every Conversation AI bot has three modes:
- Off: the default for new bots.
- Suggestive: the AI drafts a reply and your team reviews and sends it.
- Auto-Pilot: the AI replies on its own, based on your configuration.
You can build a bot from a guided form, from your own prompt, or with a visual flow builder. Bots can hand the conversation to a human, stop, send follow-ups and trigger workflows. HighLevel recommends testing lead capture, FAQs, booking and unknown questions before switching on Auto-Pilot. Running in Suggestive mode for the first week or two is a sensible way to catch bad answers before customers see them.
AI Employee pricing
The AI Employee is billed per sub-account, on top of your HighLevel plan:
| Option | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Pay-per-use | No monthly fee | Each AI product billed by consumption |
| Starter | $20/month per sub-account | Ask AI and AI Studio; only for agencies on the $497 Founder plan |
| Growth | $50/month per sub-account | Monthly allowances, including 100 AI agent minutes for Voice AI; overage billed per use |
| Unlimited | $97/month per sub-account | Conversation, voice, reviews and content AI with no fixed cap, subject to fair use |
Growth and Unlimited are on the official pricing page. Starter is documented in the help center as exclusive to Founder agencies. The subscription is charged in US dollars, so if your card is in another currency, expect your bank’s exchange rate and any foreign transaction fees on top.
Pay-per-use rates
Some examples from HighLevel’s AI Product Pricing article (updated November 6, 2026):
| Item | Rate |
|---|---|
| Voice AI engine | $0.045 per minute |
| Voice AI text-to-speech | $0.015 to $0.17 per minute, depending on the voice model |
| Conversation AI | per token, depending on the model |
| Reviews AI | $0.01 per AI-assisted reply sent |
| Workflow AI premium actions | $0.01 per execution |
| Content AI | no extra cost, subject to fair use |
Conversation AI costs depend heavily on the model. GPT 4.1 Mini, for example, is $0.40 per million input tokens and $1.60 per million output tokens, while larger models cost several times more. Your account’s usage report shows the real cost per conversation.
Costs outside every plan
- Phone System: Voice AI calls generate telephony charges, even on Unlimited.
- WhatsApp: $10 a month per sub-account plus Meta’s fees.
- Agent Studio and advanced AI workflow actions: billed per use.
The GoHighLevel plans comparison explains the platform plans these add-ons sit on.
How to cap your AI spend
In the agency view, go to AI Suite > Plans & Limits to set a monthly AI limit per sub-account (up to $1,000). When the limit is reached you can either:
- Keep AI running and get notified (the default), or
- Block AI at the limit, which pauses it until you raise the cap or the month resets.
Alerts fire at 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%. If you start on pay-per-use, turn on blocking so you can measure real consumption before committing to a plan.
Plan or pay-per-use?
There is no one-size answer, because pay-per-use cost depends on message volume, voice minutes and the model you choose. A safe approach:
- Start on pay-per-use with a low monthly cap and blocking enabled.
- Run bots in Suggestive mode and watch the usage report for a few weeks.
- If a sub-account’s AI usage gets close to $50 a month, Growth likely pays off. Close to $97, or heavy Voice AI use, look at Unlimited.
Agencies can also resell AI Employee plans to clients at their own price and include them in SaaS mode plans. Marking up AI usage (rebilling) requires the $497 agency plan.
Pros and cons
What works well
- Replies on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, SMS, email and web chat from one inbox.
- Books straight into the CRM calendar and triggers workflows.
- Voice AI in ten languages.
- Suggestive mode for teams that want to review first.
- Per-sub-account spending caps and alerts.
What needs attention
- Billed in US dollars, per sub-account, on top of the platform plan.
- “Unlimited” means fair use, with no published number.
- Phone and WhatsApp charges add up.
- A poorly trained bot answers wrongly in your brand’s name, so setup takes time.
Verdict
The AI Employee makes sense if slow replies are costing you sales, especially on WhatsApp and outside business hours. It works best answering the basics, collecting details and booking appointments, then handing anything complex to a person.
If you don’t know your volume yet, start on pay-per-use with a low cap and test a bot in Suggestive mode during the free trial. Once you have a few weeks of usage data, choosing between Growth and Unlimited is simple.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the GoHighLevel AI Employee cost?
The official pricing page lists two plans per sub-account: Growth at $50 a month and Unlimited at $97 a month. Agencies on the $497 Founder plan can also buy the Starter plan at $20 a month per sub-account. Sub-accounts without a plan pay for each AI product per use.
Does the AI Employee work on WhatsApp?
Yes. HighLevel's help center lists WhatsApp as a Conversation AI channel, along with SMS, email, Facebook, Instagram, live chat and the website chat widget. The WhatsApp integration itself still costs $10 a month per sub-account plus Meta's per-message fees, outside the AI plan.
Can Voice AI speak languages other than English?
Yes. HighLevel's Voice AI language article lists Spanish, French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian, Dutch, Hindi, Russian and Japanese alongside English. You can pick one language or a combination, and HighLevel recommends testing before going live.
Is the Unlimited plan truly unlimited?
It is unlimited subject to fair use, and HighLevel does not publish a numeric cap. Voice AI calls still generate Phone System charges on Unlimited.
Can I stop AI costs from running away?
Yes. In the agency view, AI Suite > Plans & Limits lets you set a monthly cap per sub-account (up to $1,000) and choose whether AI keeps running with alerts or pauses at the limit. Alerts fire at 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%.
